Google Play is a digital distribution service operated and developed by Google. It serves as the official app store for Android. Applications are available on Google Play either free of charge or at a cost. It also serves as a digital media store, offering the Google Play Music (a music distribution and podcast service), Google Play Books (an online bookstore), Google Play Newsstand (a magazine service), Google Play Movies & TV (a movie and TV show distribution service), and Google Play Games (a social gaming service).
It was launched on October 22, 2008 as the Android Market and was rebranded as Google Play on March 6, 2012.[Citation needed]
